The city is known for its impressive medieval fortifications, which include a double ring of ramparts and 52 towers, and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Carcassonne's history dates back to the Roman period, and it has been a strategically important site throughout the centuries. The current fortifications were largely constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the city has been remarkably well-preserved since then. Visitors to Carcassonne can explore the winding streets, ancient architecture, and picturesque squares that make the city so popular.

The main attraction in Carcassonne is La Cité de Carcassonne, the fortified medieval city that is enclosed by the double ring of ramparts and towers. Visitors can stroll along the walls and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside, as well as explore the narrow streets and hidden corners of the city. Highlights of La Cité de Carcassonne include the Basilique Saint-Nazaire, a stunning Gothic cathedral, and the Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle that offers a glimpse into the lives of medieval nobility.

In addition to La Cité de Carcassonne, the city has a number of other attractions that are worth exploring. The Canal du Midi, a 17th-century canal that stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, passes through Carcassonne and offers scenic boat rides. The Bastide Saint-Louis, the "new" town of Carcassonne, was built in the 13th century and offers a different perspective on the city's history and architecture. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, located in the former Présidial building, houses a collection of fine art and decorative objects from the region.

Carcassonne is also known for its food and wine. The Languedoc-Roussillon region is famous for its hearty, rustic cuisine, which includes dishes like cassoulet (a bean and meat stew) and confit de canard (preserved duck). The area is also home to a number of vineyards and wineries that produce delicious red and white wines.

Visitors to Carcassonne can stay in a variety of accommodations, including hotels, bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals. There are options to suit every budget and preference, from luxury hotels to quaint guesthouses. Many of the accommodations are located within the historic city walls, providing a unique and memorable experience.

Carcassonne is easily accessible by train or car from many major cities in France. The city has a small airport, the Carcassonne Salvaza Airport, that is served by several low-cost airlines. The history of the Carcassonne Castle Domain (CarcassonneCastle.com) began in 2017, when Tommy Butler, a digital entrepreneur based in Glasgow, Scotland, and his partner Trisha visited the medieval city of Carcassonne. During their visit, while enjoying a meal at a local restaurant, Tommy was inspired to search for the domain CarcassonneCastle.com. After finding it available, he quickly purchased the domain, marking the beginning of their journey with this iconic destination.

Their love for Carcassonne and the surrounding region, including the scenic Aude and the South of France, led to several trips, further fueling their passion for the city’s rich history and culture. These experiences sparked the idea to develop the website into a comprehensive online resource for Carcassonne Castle and its surrounding attractions, offering insights into the city’s history, local tours, and accommodations.

Now, in 2025, plans are underway to enhance the website with more features, ensuring visitors can access even more information and resources about Carcassonne Castle and the wider region. Tommy and Trisha are excited to continue their journey with the site and would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all visitors for their interest and support.
